Queer people have used objects to covertly communicate their identities and preferences throughout history in a practice called “flagging”. This means that some objects hold significant symbolism to queer communities, creating a hidden language in which objects and identities act as one.
This work builds on the notion of queer flagging by questioning how objects can represent different facets of identity through an individual's attachment to them.
I asked my queer friends and family to look through their collections of objects and find some that they felt represented their identity. I wanted the participants to consider their identity, rather than being limited by their sexual orientation. I then assembled these objects into photographic collages. I layered the collages in a projection on the wall, transforming everyone’s objects into an abstract representation of my community of queer loved ones.
Ultimately through this work, I wanted to highlight the individuality within queer identities and celebrate the people around me who make me feel comfortable in my own identity.
This work was exhibited in the "Eternal for a Few Weeks" exhibition at AD Space.
